Meet our chickens- Yolko, Omelet, and Jeffrie (don't ask)! Last year one of the 1st grade classrooms hatched a handful of baby chicks and guess who got to bring them home? Me! Did you know that hens are legal in most cities? As long as you don't have any of the crowing variety (aka roosters) hens make wonderful additions to any city-dwellers backyard, or in our case suburban yard. We live in your typical tract-home neighborhood and haven't had any problems or complaints since the addition of our little backyard pets. The chickens are kept contained by a cute white picket fence we bought at Loews and they have a grand old time scritch scratchin' around the backyard in the evening. They are wonderful bug catchers and will even eat scorpions, which is a huge plus since we don't use exterminators due to the toxic chemicals. Their poop is the best fertilizer around AND come October we will start getting three fresh eggs daily! It's a great way to not only save money, but also know exactly where your food is coming from!
