I am a firm proponent of vaccinating my child, but after doing tons of research I have decided to follow the alternate schedule developed by Dr. Sears. One of the main reasons I'm doing this is due to the large amounts of aluminum found in vaccines. The FDA states that a healthy child should be exposed to no more than 30 micrograms of aluminum in a day, but if I were to vaccinate Jackson according to the CDC recommendations he would receive approximately 1225 micrograms in one fell swoop each time he's vaccinated! Excessive aluminum intake has been linked with neurological harm and incredibly there have been no studies done to test the effects of this much aluminum on children who are being vaccinated.
Another reason for reducing the number of shots Jackson receives at one time is to isolate any reactions he might have to a vaccination. It was a relief that his pediatrician agreed to the alternate schedule (I've heard horror stories of doctors asking you to leave their practice if you don't follow the regular schedule). So yesterday he got one combo shot for Hib, Hep B, and Polio (the Pediarix) and received his Rotavirus vaccine orally. He barely cried and was over it within minutes, with none of the side effects sometimes seen along with vaccinations (swelling, redness, fever). He'll go in again at 3 months for a shot-only visit and we'll basically be in to the doctor every month for a year in order to stagger his shots while still fully vaccinating him. You can learn more about alternate shot schedules by visiting http://www.thevaccinebook.com/ and if you want to be really educated about all of the different vaccines your child will receive I highly recommend reading The Vaccine Book written by Dr. Sears!

Baby Food Obsession!
So Jackson won't be starting solids until he's at least 6 months old (exclusively breastfeeding until this point reduces the chances of him developing allergies and diabetes, both of which run on Ryan's side), which is stil 3 1/2 months away. But that doesn't stop me from obsessing over all of the cool gadgets you can use to make your own baby food. I got the cookbook "Top 100 Baby Purees" and "Cooking for Baby."
The Beaba Babycook™ (BPA-Free) Babyfood Maker is a one-of-a-kind, compact appliance that steams, purees, defrosts and re-heats the freshest, healthiest food for your baby. It enables parents to provide the best ingredients for their baby's food at a fraction of the cost of jarred foods! Not only does preparing baby's food save families money, it also drastically cuts down on packaging and waste.
Vegetables, fruits and meats steam in less than 15 minutes and retain their vitamins and flavors. After blending them to the desired consistency, parents can freeze extra portions and later use their Babycook to quickly defrost and reheat previously prepared food.
Amazing! I also love that it's BPA free (hard to find in plastic steamers) and easy to clean. For some reason I'm just enchanted with this machine, but not it's $150 price tag (absurd!). I'm on a mission to find one on eBay and I currently have my eye on one that is only at $0.99 right now! I'm also planting zucchini so that I can use them for Jackson's baby food! Some of the other foods I can't wait to make his first tastes are oatmeal (using steel cut oats), rice cereal (using brown rice instead of white), applesauce puree, and sweet pear puree. So fun!

Maui!
Right now Ryan and I are sitting in our beautiful hotel room on Kaannapali beach. Listening to Jackson poop. Man this kid loves to to poop loud and often, also accompanied by comical red-faced grunting. Breastfed babies really have nothing to push for (it's all liquid anyways), but Jackson must enjoy it because push he does! Unfortunately I forgot the camera cord otherwise I would post some of the gorgeous pictures from our trip. Oh and you have to see Jackson in his first swimsuit! Adorable! I'll be sure to post them all when we get home next week!

- Bearing weight on his legs (he never wants to sit!)
- Lifting his head to 90 degress when on his tummy
